Customs

Numerous customs and traditions have been maintained in Kosinj. One of them is the art of weaving colorful homespun rugs (šarenica) and bedspreads (biljac) which , once items of everyday usage, today survive as distinctive local souvenirs, along with woolen bags, flax towels, red hats (crvenkape), tamburica dangubica (a stringed instrument), and various metalwork and pottery items. The local herbal brandy and oils made from blueberry and other forest plants, according to traditional recipes, have medicinal properties, and all the food in Kosinj is organic and of the highest quality: from potatoes and cabbages, milk and dairy products (obtained form cattle and sheep fed on rich grazing meadows), traditional bread made under a baking lid, spit-roasted lamb, prosciutto (pršut) and bacon, to doughnuts and masnica pie.
At St. Petar’s and St. Ana’s churches you can hear the singing of large folk choirs, but of special interest are the carnival customs: the festivities are loud and merry, with a fancy dress carnival parade. On the Shrove Tuesday the traditional Dedi – carnival bell bearers, walk through village in procession, as they have been doing for centuries.
